Myanmar children in danger from abusers

Germany News.Net
Tuesday 13th May, 2008

Aid groups in Myanmar say children are now being targeted by child traffickers.

In the hardest-hit regions of the Irrawaddy delta, hungry and barefoot children dressed in rags have been left begging on roadsides.

Traffickers are especially looking out for children who have lost their parents or who are resident in crowded camps.

UNICEF says with people desperately in need after Cyclone Nargis, children are now at risk of abuse and trafficking.

Two suspected traffickers have been arrested fro trying to recruit children at a camp site.

UNICEF says 3,000 schools were wiped out by the cyclone, leaving 500,000 children without classrooms.

The agency said it was working to create makeshift schools in relief camps, in the hope of giving children a chance to resume their education.

Nearly half of those killed in the Myanmar cyclone were children.

Meanwhile, France, Great Britain and Germany have convinced that the international community must help the victims of cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, even if they have to do so without the permission of the country's ruling military government.

But although the three biggest EU countries want to submit this proposal to the United Nations Security Council, they have failed to receive unanimous support from the 27 European Union member states.

The EU has, however, called on the military junta in Myanmar to open its borders immediately to foreign aid.

Most foreign aid is only getting into the country in small quantities.

In the Irrawaddy Delta, the area is now being soaked again with heavy rainfall.

At least 30,000 people are still missing.

Don't believe the western press

We in Myanmar’s neighbor know what is cooking by the western presses. They want the return of western domination. Myanmar has oil and gas that they want. They have been doing all the smearing and pressure to get their hand in the country. Aids from Asian countries and humanitarian helps were offered and accepted without problem. Myanmar can do without western help same like it can do without their sanction just yesterday. We in the neighborhood are well informed of what’s happening there and it is absolutely different from what the western press brainwashing their readers. Ignorant citizen are dangerous citizen. Just look at what happened to Iraq. It is very sad that western press and their spokmen depend on lies to make a living.

East meets West

Wow I wonder if it’s going to get as bad as Katrina, the response times are similiar. How many New Orleans children were targeted- OK see what happens when you let in help, they let out how bad it is so the west will have to go in! They now have an excuse and that is why help for the people is usually death for the leaders. Personally we should all help each other and money should be abolished-How well that’s the problem.

Cyclone death toll updated to 34,000
May 14, 2008 - THE official death toll from Burma’s devastating Cyclone Nargis has risen to 34,273, with 27,836 people missing, state radio said today.

]
“According to to the latest information, 34,273 were killed, 1,403 were injured and 27,836 missing,'' it said.

The new official toll raises the number of those killed when the storm hit on May 3 from 31,938 dead and 29,770 missing.

However, the United Nations has warned that the toll probably exceeds 100,000 and that many more may die unless vital aid reaches the 1.5 million survivors.

Majority Of Dead In Myanmar Cyclone Were Children, Agency Claims
May 13, 2008 - A U.N. agency said on Tuesday that at least 40 percent of the cyclone victims in Myanmar were children, with the toll likely to rise because of the military’s continued rejection of international aid.

]
According to spokesman Dan Collinson, the devastation, which erased whole communities from the landscape, took a high toll on young people because the majority of Myanmar’s population is below 18. He told Agence France-Presse, “To be honest it’s highly likely to be more than 40 percent, because children are less likely to withstand these kinds of storm surges. Children are that much more vulnerable."

But despite the massive destruction of the cyclone that has killed over 62,000, Myanmar’s military rulers continue to refuse to accept international aid and volunteers. Vice-Admiral Soe Thein said his government was grateful for the aid shipment from Washington but insisted the military has sufficient capability to handle the awesome task of search and rescue efforts as well as rebuilding the impoverished country. But aid workers dispute this claim and said the government lacks the equipment and the expertise to distribute aid and even conduct search and rescue efforts because they don’t have helicopters to reach inaccessible communities.

In Irrawaddy Delta, one of the heavily-hit communities, the Burmese military transport aid with dugout canoes. As frustration of aid workers and international donors rises and the continued insistence of the Burmese military to control most of the distribution, dead bodies are piling up on the streets across Burma.

Do not believe what the media is telling you

Some media report that mostly Children were killed. Now another news saying that Adult were killed more and mostly children left behind. UNICEF has no access to those area.
Excuse me, this is the reason trying to get into Myanmar land. It is politic. Period.

Hey EU, if you decide to RAMBO Myanmar Military Junta, we are ready.

Hey EU, our 2008 Presidential Hopeful Sen. JOHN McCAIN team’s analysis is always good and right. If EU decide to take military action RAMBO to surround the Myanmar’s new capital city NayPyiTaw, to drive Gen. Than Shwe’s power out of Burma to exile to China’s Yunnan province; we need more Black Hawk fighter-copters, the USS Kitty Hawk is ready; it takes 72-hour operation to complete the whole RAMBO misson; because RAMBO is 3-D, may be EU want to wait for the 2nd BIG Cyclone pass off first; what’s you say EU ?

You don't need to see it to believe it.

For Burmese like me, common sense tells us the media is not exaggerating about the tragedy: the rising death toll caused by Nargis, the seizing of the high energy biscuits and other aid intended for victims, the denial of visa to international aid workers. That’s why I wish and hope everyday the UN led intervention to hard hit delta area happens sooner than later. That’s the only effective action to save the victims.
