Elisabetta Cocciaretto, a 19-year-old Italian, stunned sixth-seeded Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday in the Palermo (Italy) Ladies Open, advancing to the quarterfinals of a WTA Tour event for the first time in her career.

Cocciaretto saved four of the five break points she faced against Vekic, who struggled with her own serve. Vekic fired seven double faults against just one ace and put only 47 percent of her first serves in play.

Next up for Cocciaretto is a matchup against either fourth-seeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit or Germany's Laura Siegemund.

In other second-round action Wednesday, another Italian, Sara Errani, advanced, rebounding for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova. After Pliskova won the first 13 points of the match and claimed the first set with four service breaks, Errani's serve was broken just once more the rest of the way.

France's Fiona Ferro defeated Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-5, 6-2, and Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich routed Italy's Jasmine Paolini 6-0, 6-2.
