MUNICH, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Germany caught the worst possible start into their Euro 2020 campaign after Mats Hummels' own goal helped France to secure all three points at the Football Arena Munich in Group F on Tuesday.
The hosts grabbed a bright start on home soil as Mats Hummels headed over the target from central position with just three minutes played but France staged a rock-solid defence and looked dangerous on fast breaks as the match progressed.
With 20 minutes gone Didier Deschamps' men eventually broke the deadlock after Hummels cleared Lucas Hernandez drilled low cross past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into the wrong goal.
Germany pressed frenetically but couldn't find a gap in France's well-positioned defence meanwhile the FIFA world champions had goals disallowed from Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema due to an offside positions in the closing stages.
With the result, Portugal top Group F followed by France, who are equal on points, Germany and Hungary. On Saturday Hungary clash with France whereas front runners Portugal meet Germany.
